Philippe De Backer is a Belgian national and has been an MEP representing the Open VLD (ALDE) since September 2011. He studied biotechnology at the University of Ghent where he also earned a doctorate in 2008.
During his student days, MEP De Backer was active in the Liberal Flemish Students Association (LVSV) in Ghent and he was a core member of the liberal think tank 'Liberales'. From 2007 to 2010, De Backer was president of Jong VLD Nationaal, the youth section of Open Vld. In that period, he was also a member of the city council of Kapellen.
Before joining the European Parliament, Mr.De Backer worked as analyst at Vesalius Biocapital, a Luxembourg based venture capital firm specialised in the life-sciences. He has an expertise in the valorisation of IP developed by public research institutes and setting-up early ventures in the life-sciences.
In what concerns health care, Philippe believes that bringing innovation and new therapies quickly and safely to the patient is crucial. Therefore, the EU should create a framework that stimulates excellent research and allows new therapies to come to the market without unnecessary delay. This can improve the lives of thousands of patients.
His pre-political journey is thus one thoroughly embedded in sciences and healthcare related issues. We are therefore excited to welcome him to the HFE team.
